Choral singing is as challenging, demanding and ultimately as rewarding as any other leisure activity. It is possible to reach extremely high standards with hard work and that is what the singers in Bride Street Church Choir aspire to. Membership of the choir is free, with music books and tuition being funded by the parish and from occasional fundraising events and donations. The choir is an all adult group of various ages from 25 upwards. Voices are divided into low and high, that is basses and tenors for the men, and altos and sopranos for the ladies. |

When all four sections sing in harmony the results are very rewarding for the singers and the listeners alike . By choosing some difficult music, such as Handel's ‘Hallelujah Chorus’, or perhaps some intricate arrangements of Christmas or Easter music, the results of many weeks of rehearsal become evident in the resulting sound. In 2008 we will be organizing a series of singing classes for members who wish to improve their voices and to further enhance the sound and tone from the choir. Our programme follows the Church Calendar, and at any one time the choir may have up to sixty pieces of music, short or long, in repertoire. Unlike choral societies, church choirs sing in public every week and it is important to have variety and balance in the music we use. It needs to be appealing, relevant and to have a spiritual dimension which enhances rather than takes over the celebrations of the day. We sing on Sundays at noon, from September to June, and also over Christmas and especially at Holy Week and Easter time. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays in the vestry of Bride Street Church, from 8—10pm and are directed by Choirmaster Ger Lawlor who works hard to maintain a balance between work and enjoyment. In addition to singing in Bride Street Church, the Choir has appeared on TV, Radio and was one of the principal participants in the ‘Carols from Wexford’ CD which has sold over 2500 copies to date. For major liturgies we often invite guest soloists to join with us. This is very rewarding as it gives our work a lift as well as doing music which is a little more challenging. 2008 will be a special year as we celebrate 150 years of music making with lots of great singing! The Calendar section of the Website gives some idea of the amount of music we cover and what we are rehearsing at present. Future plans include further development work, touring, additional radio and TV appearances and possibly another recording in 2008 or 2009. |
